How to Cite Multiple Authors in a Research Paper


When conducting research for a paper, it is not uncommon to find texts, journals and books written by more than one author. These texts often offer researchers compelling arguments from not just one scholar but many, providing students with a great wealth of knowledge and insight to a particular subject.

In-Text Citations

List the authors' names directly in the text or the parenthetical citation. For example: Lewis, Rice and Jones contend that citing a source with multiple authors is not difficult (45).

List the authors' names in the parenthetical citation. For example: The authors state that, "citing sources with multiple authors is not difficult if the steps are followed correctly" (Lewis, Rice and Jones 45).

Use bibliographic information to write citations if there are more than three authors of a text. For example: Lewis et al. contend that writing citations with more than three authors is not difficult if directions are followed carefully (46).

MLA Works Cited Page

Write the first name in the traditional MLA format of citing an author's name; last name, first name. For example: Last name, first name

List the authors' names that follow in the first name, last name format. Follow the authors' names with a period.

Cite the name of the text.

Identify the ocation of the publishing company followed by a colon.

Place the year of publication followed by a period.

Determine whether the text was found online or a hard copy text. Then follow with a period.
