ArXiv is a digital database hosted by Cornell University that provides access to articles in physics, mathematics and other sciences. If you use an article accessed through ArXiv as a source of information for your paper, you must include bibliographic information for that article in a reference list at the end of your paper. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), there is a proper format for the citation of articles accessed from a database.
Begin your citation with the last name of the author, followed by the author's first initial. For example:
Smith, J.
List the year, month and day of publication. This should appear in parentheses and followed by a period. For example:
(2010, June 1).
List the title of the article, followed by a period. Capitalize only the first letter of the title; you should also capitalize any proper nouns that appear in the title. For example:
Rich-club and page-club coefficients for directed graphs.
List the name of the journal in which the article originally appears, as well as the volume and issue numbers. Both the journal title and the volume number should be italicized. The issue number should appear in parentheses. For example:
Journal of Statistical Mechanics, 389(11),
List the page numbers on which the article appears, followed by a period. For example:
2290-2299.
Conclude your citation with the date on which you accessed the article, and the name of the database. This should appear in the following format:
Retrieved November 14, 2010, from the arXiv database.
The completed citation should appear as follows:
Smith, J. (2010, June 1). Rich-club and page-club coefficients for directed graphs. Journal of Statistical Mechanics, 389(11), 2290-2299. Retrieved November 14, 2010, from the arXiv database.
