How to Number the Pages of College Essays
In many college courses, such as English, literature review or creative writing, you are often asked to write essays, and they are often a large part of your grade. The grade you receive is based not only on content and grammar, but also the way your paper is formatted. A properly formatted paper has a correctly spaced body and margins, and often includes the page numbers at the top of the page. Including your last name and the page number on every page may help your professor if the pages become separated.
Open the word processing software you are using to write your essay. Click on "Insert" at the top of the page.
Click on "Page Numbers." Under the "Position" menu, choose "Top of Page (Header)." Under "Alignment," select "Right." Click on the check box if you need to have a number on the first page of the essay. Check with your professor to see if they want this.
Click "OK" to close the menu. Page numbers automatically appear in order on each page. Double click on the page number header on any page to open a text box.
Type your last name in front of the page number, then click anywhere outside of the box to save it. Your last name is applied to every page in the essay.
