The American Psychological Association (APA) publishes a manual of formatting standards for research papers. Used most often within the social sciences, APA style guidelines establish a consistent model for presenting research and citing sources. The first of four major sections required by APA style is the title page, which serves as the cover sheet for the essay.
Format your document according to APA guidelines. Set all margins to one inch, change spacing to double and choose Times New Roman or a similar font in a 10- to 12-point size.
Set up a page header, placing page numbers flush right. Insert the words "Running head" flush left without quotations. Follow with a colon, a space and the title of your paper in all caps. According to Purdue Online Writing Lab, the cover page is the only page of the document that includes "Running head" before the title in the header. The header on subsequent pages should include only the page number flush right and the title in all caps flush left.
Center the title of your paper using standard capitalization in the upper half of the title page.
Type your first name, middle initial, if desired, and last name below your title.
Type the name of your institutional affiliation below your name.
